Math

Programs we have used:
  • Ray's Arithmetic-- loved the simple style and the amount of word problems, but I just need more hand-holding than this offers.
  • Math Mammoth-- still working GREAT for my worksheet-lover (Hulk) and as supplemental material for the others: this program contains loads of practice work on each area.
  • RightStart-- totally scripted, very teacher-intensive, but I love the approach; has been a complete win for Goblin, and the games have been a win all around.
  • Khan Academy-- took me a while to figure out how this works, but now that I've gotten the hang of recommendations, I am loving this option for days when I just can't work one-on-one.
We have our good days and our bad days of course, but we seem to have hit our groove for Math (FINALLY).  Goblin is having loads of fun slowly going through RightStart A; we complete each lesson in 1 or 2 days.  Hulk chose to stick with Math Mammoth grade 1 for his primary program, and we supplement with games and some other added fun from RightStart; he works on 1-3 pages each day, depending on his motivation.  For Athena, she's cruising through RightStart C completing 1 or 2 lessons each day; math is still her worst subject, but we've had much less frustration and crying since making this change.  I recently set-up accounts for all the kiddoes on Khan Academy, which I was wary to do for an online program, but it has been a great way to get them working on their math without me, for those days when I need a break but know that we really need to keep working.
