History

Mr. Crazy and I decided that we wanted to approach history from the beginning, instead of focusing on American history in the early years like many public school programs do.  We're using Story of the World vol 1: Ancient Times as our spine.  However, we paired this with The Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World (from the Ice Age to the Fall of Rome) for a broader view of the time frame.  This has allowed me to add in information on areas which are completely (or very nearly) not covered in SotW. I also used Bringing Up Learner's Mosaic Myths, Maps, and Marvels curriculum as a guideline to bring our lessons into an order I was more comfortable with, including adding in a brief geography unit before jumping into ancient history. I try to include at least one fun activity each week; these come from the SotW Activity Guide as well as a variety of other books and online resources.

This first segment of history will take approximately 18 months to complete (factoring in our breaks of course).  I love not being tied to the typical 36 week school year for our lessons; this gives us the ability to spend more time than usual on a time frame that interests us.  There is so much to learn and think about from the earliest parts of our history that it seems a real shame how little time it is usually given in a classroom.

As with our science curriculum, I will try to link all the posts into our schedule as they are written.
